Iran calls for ban on striking nuke facilities

VIENNA, Austria ā€” Iran wants a 150-nation conference to ban military strikes on nuclear facilities.

Iran proposed the initiative Wednesday and wants it put to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general conference next month.

Its move was divulged to The Associated Press by diplomats and confirmed by Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s IAEA representative.

The diplomats said Wednesday the move is geared toward increasing pressure on Israel, which has not ruled out air attacks to cripple Iran’s nuclear program.

But Soltanieh said Iran is not afraid of Israel and simply seeks support for a resolution prohibiting all armed attacks against nuclear installations anywhere.
